ORAL SURGERY

Extraction

Dental tooth extraction is a procedure that every patient undergoes at some point in their lives. Although it induces fear among patients, it may be an absolute necessity to maintain good oral health.

Reasons why your dentist may propose a tooth extraction:

  • Tooth infection or severe decay
  • removal of deciduous teeth
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Irreparable damage from trauma
  • Impaction (in the case of wisdom teeth)
  • To make space for tooth realignment with an orthodontic appliance
  • To allow dentures or implants to be fitted

Minor Oral Surgery

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop in your jaws, often there is not enough space for them to erupt into the correct position like the other teeth in your mouth. They can vary in their position. Please see the image below for their different positions. Some may not erupt fully because they are impacted against another tooth or may be partly covered by the gums (oral mucosa) A combination of this varied position, impaction, being partially erupted and other causes may create issues. You may not be aware that these are occurring.
